Somehow the underside of the coaches seems to be even dirtier than the underside of the locos. On a loco, things are greasy and the dirt sticks to the loco. You don't get dirty unless you touch things, and you only get dirty on the parts of you and your clothing which do touch - admittedly that usually ends up being quite extensive! But the underside of a coach seems to be plastered with a layer of powdery dirt. Every time you brush against anything, or move anything, or hit anything with a hammer, a shower of dry dirt descends on you. It seems to be particularly adept at getting down the neck of your shirt.
