Query on Sudan Diesel Loco

Post by David Heath »

Hi,

Can anyone tell me whether this SRC loco is Chinese, Indian or even South Korean-built?

Thanks!

This is a phase 2 SDD1 numbered 2008 assembled by CSR (now a unit of CRRC), unit in photo was from Ziyang

SDD1 is 99 tonnes with a Cat 3516B

The Sudan also have the lightweight derivative, the SDD1A which is 81 tonnes with a Cat 3512B

Thanks for the answer! Do you know how many locos SRC has of each SDD type?

This answer is based on published photos, Facebook, Youtube, and news items from a few Yahoo Groups. Due to non ownership of copyright if you require photos please PM

Will go by builder/assembler, remember that Sudan is still embargoed by most western countries, unable to source OEM spares for GE/EMD

Locomotives worked over government owned rail, may be government or privately owned, ownership not known for a number of types, whatever the ownership, numbered into a common sequence. Numbering is in Arabic

GE; a handful of U15 and U20 are active - some are A-1-A, 2016 photos of U15 1715 and 1751, all of the remaining UM22C appeared to be stored due to non availability of parts. No evidence of post 2014 use of the ex Namibian 33 Class

EMD: members of all classes appear active, evidence of Chinese contractors rebuilding some types. If you own 645 crankcases, all of the bits required for full rebuilds are available from non-USA third party vendors
Henschel JL22CU (1601-1610) recent photos of 1605/1606/1608. 1606 appears to be a 2015 rebuild
Henschel JT22CU (1901-1920) Appears to be Chinese contractor rebuilding this type at Atbara
EMD JT22LC-2 (1950-1950) one or two in use, number stored intact pending rebuild?

View this Al Jazeera video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62xtTpzNkAE

India; most of the new build YDM-4 (plus 10 rebuilds) from the 1530-1549 block (1542 highest number sighted) appear to be active. The 5 double ended 2300hp DLW passenger locos 1560-1564 (similar to the pair in Angola) active. The 4 Hitachi C-C owned by National Electricity Commission (1520-1524) were rebuilt at Golden Rock Railway Workshop (Tiruchirappalli) in 2004-2006, with Indian style high noses

China; this is where things start to get complicated, several different liveries, ownership blurred, maintained by Chinamen at Atbara. Apart from wrecks, most appear active
SDD1 (old style single headlight) State owned 2000-2007, also 2200, 3100 upward
SDD1 (old style single headlight) appear privately owned, white/turquoise/purple stripe livery (looks bloody awful) numbers unknown
SDD1 (flared LED? headlight) 2008-2012, also 2202
SDD1A locos between 2101 to 2107 sighted, also block starting at 2250. privately owned 4200 upward (4200-4203?)
CK25 diesel hydraulic, 81 tonnes, C-C 2150 and 2151 sighted, 2015 build
Have not tracked DMU

From video clips and photos feel around 40+ Chinese mainline units in use, so with the other goers probably around 65+ active mainline, with around 20 to 25 repairable GE/EMD hulks stored.

Critters; 0-6-0 either mechanical? or hydraulic from Kawasaki and SAN (India), around 6 to 8 appear to be active at Atbara and Port Sudan
