Two new South African railway book titles

Post by John Ashworth »

Good Day, Ladies & Gentlemen,

I hope this finds you well. It is nearly sixteen months since my last update on my series of railway books, so no-one can accuse me of bombarding people with too frequent e-mails J

First and foremost, for those who do contact me, please note I have moved house (which is why so much time has passed since the issue of my previous books), and ALL my previously advised contact details have changed.
The new information is :
Dennis Moore, 808 Val de Vie Estate, Paarl 7646, South Africa

E Mail : Moore3450@ictmail.co.za

TWO new books to announce this time, and both focus exclusively on 3' 6" South African Garratts at work on the national railway network (South African Railways) . Garratts at work in industry and narrow gauge Garratts have been comprehensively covered in other titles already issued in my catalogue. These two new large sumptuous books are devoted entirely to Big Garratts on the Big Railway. Eight different classes are featured at work and the range is country wide, indeed virtually everywhere that Garratts operated in a 28 year period. No less than eight different classes are featured at work. The last years of everyday Garratt operation on South African Railways are covered, not only well known places like Lootsberg and Montagu passes, but with particular emphasis on the far less visited areas such as Vryburg - Mafeking and Waterval Boven - Breyten to name but two.
=======================================================================================
GARRATT COUNTRY (available in two versions ***)

160 PAGES

( (a) Very large landscape format 33cm x 28cm : hardcover with dustjacket, image wrap, - your choice.
(b) Standard landscape format 25cm x 20 cm : hardcover with dustjacket, image wrap, softcover - your choice.

South Africa was the 'Garratt Country', as simple as that. The South African Railways ('S.A.R.') were amongst the first to embrace the Garratt articulated locomotive, and certainly became the most prolific user of them, on two gauges. This book focuses on the country's 3'6" gauge Garratts at work on the metals of S.A.R. Presented in approximate geographical order, on an 'Around the Country' basis, there is extensive coverage of the last S.A.R. lines worked by the mighty GMA/M class - the World's most numerous Garratt type - the last of which was only withdrawn from regular S.A.R. service as late as 1985.

Also extensively featured is the amazing Indian summer of S.A.R. Garratt operation, facilitated by the return to service of at least one, sometimes several locomotives, of six different classes : GB, GEA, GF, GL, GMA/M and GO; as well as a pair of Zimbabwean locomotives. The Author participated in many specialised private photographic charters and also provides thorough coverage of all other contemporary Garratt activity that continued well into the new millennium.

Complete with schematic maps, detailed captions, lively anecdotes, and technical and historic commentary .

(*** Please note that other than the page size and a slight change in cover design, the content of the two versions is otherwise the same, but the standard size is obviously cheaper)

==========================================================================================
GARRATTS GALORE (available in two versions ***)
226 PAGES
(a) Very large landscape format 33cm x 28cm : hardcover with dustjacket,or image wrap, - your choice.
(b) Standard landscape format 25cm x 20 cm : hardcover with dustjacket,or image wrap, or softcover - your choice.

Garratts Galore - a massive 226 pages . This book has entirely different content to "Garratt Country" and a different presentation. Commencing in 1979, and set out in approximate chronological order, there is extensive coverage of the last routes in South Africa worked by the mighty GMA/M class - the World's most numerous Garratt type - the last of which was only withdrawn from regular S.A.R. service as late as 1985. The remarkable renaissance of Garratts in heritage operation (freight, mixed and passenger trains) in South Africa is thoroughly covered. Eight different classes of Garratts in operation on the metals of South African Railways.
Complete with schematic maps, detailed captions, lively anecdotes, and technical and historic commentary .

(*** Please note that other than the page size and a slight change in cover design, the content of the two versions is otherwise the same, but the standard size is obviously cheaper)

==================================================================================

Please note that "Garratt Country" and "Garratts Galore" have entirely different content, only the schematic maps are common to both .
A note on book sizes (standard or very large landscape) : The standard landscape format book should satisfy most readers, the huge very large landscape format version is to cater for some of the Author's regular customers who demand this format, but it is unavoidably rather expensive …. But, then again, it's an awful lot of book! (Several people have commented that the very large landscape format books are just 'really special' : the choice is yours) . Again it is emphasised that "Garratt Country" and "Garratts Galore" have entirely different content, only the schematic maps are common to both.
HOWEVER, due to pressures on server space it is possible that the two standard landscape books will only be available until the 20th July 2017. Thereafter, you may have to e mail me and request for the them to be "loaded" to the site once more.
This e-mail is not only intended for potential buyers of one or more of these books, although that is obviously the primary purpose. However, for those who just wish to browse, you are most welcome . As always, full and free previews of (every page of) every title are available from these links. Just follow the <preview> function. Don't forget to enlarge to <<full screen>>. But if you enjoy these free previews, please consider a purchase from the 42 titles in the catalogue; it is only by much appreciated tangible support that the production of this ambitious series of books is able to continue.
Please also do visit www.blurb.com/user/store/red3450 for all of the Author's forty-two titles, covering many other countries besides South Africa, although that country will always be the prime focus of this series.

*** COMING LATER 2017 / 2018 ***

FOOTNOTES / GENERAL INFORMATION ( Please read these if you are not familiar with them, as it will answer many of the questions that people have. If it doesn't, please ask me ! )
(A) DISCOUNTS
First and foremost, may I please draw your attention to pricing. As many of you may be aware, print on demand books are unavoidably a little on the expensive side, but one does not have to pay the catalogue price. If you are buying a book / books, please go to www.goodsearch.com/blurb/coupons , or simply google Blurb Coupon Code , and you will find many sources of discounts available, which code you simply enter towards the end of the checkout process. These coupon codes are common practice in internet mail order and can be a little tricky and irritating, but it is worth persevering. Discounts of up to 25% and even 35% are often available, especially (but not solely) for first time buyers.
(B) DELIVERY COSTS
Delivery costs are inevitably relatively expensive for single copy orders, so prospective customers are urged to please consider buying all titles you may be interested in (from the catalogue of 42 books) in "one go". Or, get together with like minded friends to combine an order. ……………The delivery cost per book then comes down dramatically.
(C) IRRITATING?
As always, it is not my intention to annoy anyone. If you no longer wish to receive these very occasional e mails, please e mail me with the word , and it shall be done.

With best wishes and I hope you find something of interest here. Please e mail me if you have any queries, or phone me. PLEASE forward this e mail to anyone you think may be interested, and if they wish to be placed on my mailing list, they only have to let me know.
REGARDS
Dennis
