Iconic Bangkok station Hua Lamphong reaches the end of the line
Thailand is closing down most railway services at one of South East Asia’s most iconic grand central stations, Bangkok's Hua Lamphong. The move marks the end of an era for the century-old travel hub, a place held in nostalgic memories for backpackers from all over the world. Local residents are contesting plans to turn it into a commercial building...
This caught my eye as fellow FOTR member Nathan and myself visited this station a few years ago to see a steam-hauled special train. We were welcomed by staff at the loco depot, and were able to get on to the footplate of the locomotive in steam at the station - security guards tried to prevent us, but the driver, whom we had met the previous day at the depot, chased them away, making it clear that on the locomotive he and only he was in charge! Subsequently we walked a few hundred metres to a nearby road overbridge where we were able to get excellent photos of the train steaming out of the station.
