PRASA Finally Awards R7.5 Billion Contract To Overhaul Ageing Rolling-Stock
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa is pleased to announce the awarding of the 5-year General-Overhaul contract that will now allow for the heavy maintenance and repairs of our train sets and clear the backlog. The contract was awarded to five contractors nationally. Many of PRASA’s train sets are out of commission due to the lifespan and vandalism of their coaches, making trains hazardous and unsafe for commuters. This is a positive development for both PRASA and commuters as maintenance and refurbishment work can begin, increasing the availability of trains as they recover the lines. The lifespan of a coach is about 40 years, however, the majority of the fleet is generally over 50 years old...
