A passenger train collided with a delivery van on a level crossing in Northumberland, police said.

The incident happened at Bardon Mill when the 1627 BST Northern Rail service from Newcastle to Whitehaven struck a DHL delivery van.

The 30 passengers and train driver were unhurt, but the van driver was taken to Hexham General Hospital.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said the driver's injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

An investigation is under way involving Network Rail and British Transport Police.

Some disruption to services is expected.
