This derailer protects the entrance to Hercules marshalling yard (and the old goods shed which is FOTR's new site). It is operated by CTC.

If you don't mind, please let me correct your comment, in fact, the derailer actually protects the mainline/s from conflicting shunting or train movements from the Hercules yard and or goods shed.
