UK - Military "Rail Rover"
Here is a pic of a military Landrover - in the days when they tried anything!

I think I have that same image somewhere on my computer. I´ll check when I get home - I might even have another one.

It was taken at the military rail establishment in the UK - forgot the name. Place is one of the dvd's you lent me (Railways and War).

Two pics I picked up from the internet some time ago. One is a genuine rail-mounted Land Rover, the other just an excuse to post a pic of a Landie on a railway forum!

My first Land Rover was one similar to this - a late Series 1. The doors used to come unlatched and drop off when at speed (like going down a hill).

Wonderful forum. The rail bound land rover would probably be at Longmoor near Carlisle in north England. There was a W.D. Rail training unit there. My Father worked for the LNER. London and North Eastern Railway. It was nicknamed by some as the Late and Never Early Railway!!! So when he was called up for service in the war, thats where he ended up. Myself, I am a bit of a railway fan. I have built a part of the Isle of White Railway, from Ryde to Ventnor in the spare room. My main hobby is aircraft restoration and I put some time in at the local museum. I also help my wife, we breed miniature poodles and have a litter of four at the moment. They were spoken for before they were born!

Welcome Ken!
There is a section on model trains on the forum - how about some pics.?
Ditto for the aircraft restoration - in the Locker Room. I love planes as well, but I get more enthusiastic when in I get the chance to be in the UK. I have six plane pics in my office - a Tiger Moth, DH6, Spitfire F21, Sea Venoms flying off a carrier, a Sutherland and lastly one of the Black Buck Vulcans! Which confuses people who know I like trains!

Re: UK - Military "Rail Rover"
Echoing Kevin's sentiments, welcome Ken!
I think you'll find that most of us have a soft spot for other forms of transport, even if railways is where we devote most of our time and energy, so please feel free to post in the Locker Room.
A documentary on the restoration of a Vulcan to flying condition has aired on our South African satellite TV recently - very interesting indeed. Tom and I watched it together and could identify with those blokes crawling into narrow spaces to repair old things, although their small spaces and old things were slightly cleaner than ours!

When I was in the RAF, I was posted to 617 Sqdn. I was electrical mechanic and worked on Avro Lincolns and later on we had the Canberra B2 followed by the B6. We took the B6's to Malaya on a six month detachment, they were capable of carrying nine one thousand pounders, the terrorists didn't like us at all! I loved the RAF. It beats the Army, I did National Service in Ack Ack.

And now leaping into a Canberra thread I have fond memories of admiring (as a smallish boy) PR Mk 9's in Kenya. Why there - who knows ? And having a ride in Beverlies and Argosies!

Another Landie. I took this picture in Malakal, southern Sudan, last week. I used to drive this very same car myself 25 years ago, and it's still going. It's a Santana, a standard Land Rover 109 (or were they still called Series III in those days?) which was built in Spain.

Thanks John - very interesting. I like the truck especially with the frozen troops!
