34. November 2008 - First bridge - detail re placement

Post by Kevin Wilson-Smith »

In the previous section, the first bridge to be placed was shown, and mention was made of the fact that it had been built at this stage to ensure that the railbed was solid and smooth - as opposed to trying to add the bridge at the scenery stage would would result in less then solid support.

To fully understand the approach look at photo 3 - this shows where the cork railbed has been used AT THE BASE OF THE BRIDGE PIERS - thereby ensuring the integrity of the raibed.

Remember that the cork railbed is used to cushion the rail and ensure better running, as well as to deaden and reduce noise levels transmitted into the structure from the rails when the train/s are operating.

Photo 1 - the bridge in place.

Photo 2 - some bridge detail - actually very good.

Photo 3 - shows the use of the cork "railbed" at the base of the bridge piers.
