Lima trainset catalogue

Post by Derek Walker »

I found a grubby Lima trains catalogue from 1983/84 and have scanned some pics. Does anybody remember these? (or still have any?) I recall haveing quite a lot fo Lima stuff from SAR, but sold it off in a purge later on, I really prefer N gauage myself, but the bank wont give me a loan to buy any :-)

I remember them being very nice models. Does anyone have any still gathering dust?

The Lima stuff used to pop up occasionally at the JHB Toy fair, but the people selling them had cottoned onto the nostalgia and collectable value and hiked the prices horribly. The Toy Fair sadly has been dieing a slow death for quite some time. My godchildren have some Lima trains that I have an eye on, but I dont recall them having an SAR stuff. I scanned the balance of the SAR stuff they used to have. I particularly liked the old style guards van. You also used to get a Blue Train set and there were dummy electric loco's available too. My major gripe with Lima was that often there were horrible errors on their SAR stuff, but it was better than nothing.

I still have a large collection of HO SAR stuff . Mostly Lima. The 5E motors I changed to Athearn. I also have a couple of Lifelike 6E's . All with Athearn motors. I will take it down one day , dust it off and photo for this forum

If you think what that stock cost when it was new. I bought some of mine from Jack Lemkus and OK Bazaars. Circa 1975-1982. If I knew what I know now I would have bought everything that I could afford. They also brought out a set of "Metro Blitz". Those must be like gold now.

You should see the prices now. I have been buying odds and ends recently and what you pay for one coach now you paid for a complete set when they came out and still had change to fly to Durban and back. Lima HO SAR rolling stock prices are getting worse than N gauge rolling stock prices. I havent seen a Metroblitz set yet, but have seen some interesting customs, including a shoz meyl, a white train and green 5E's. This stuff is becoming quite a good investment.

I bought a Lima Class 34 for around R800 with shipping on eBay in 2007. Round about 2-3 weeks ago a maroon and yellow 34 sold for $190 and a blue train 34 sold for $290... Crazy stuff...

I do have a Lima HO MetroBlitz, consisting of a 5E plus 4 carriages. I will download a pic later.

I also have a pic of my Father as a station foreman at a little dorp called Ottoshooop cc 1948, near Mafikeng. As a youngster, we travelled all over this area, staying at various interesting stations like Rustof, Klipriver, Enstra, Evaton, Angus and Modrea and at some stage I actually went to school on board a 15F. I have some Les Pivnic publications, and some great memories are rekindled.

Hi All.

If anyone is wanting to dispose or sell collections, big or small, please contact me.

I will buy almost any SAR Lima. I do a large amount of reworking and refurbishing.
