Where does all the ash go?

Post by John Ashworth »

Nathan wrote:Viewed from the inspection pit, one can clearly see the ahspan slide that is
operated by a pull rod in the cab floor. The slide is opened during the fire
cleaning period and the dampened ashes and clinkers, will make their way
into the ashpit. This important fixture must always be closed, as live coals
can fall out and cause lineside fires, whilst the train is on the move.

It is always amazing how impressive all the workings under a steam loco look, when down in the inspection pit!
