Locomotive headlights.

Post by M. Hardy-Randall »

As I had mentioned on another page, I was curious about the usefulness of the locomotive headlights. In Switzerland the Federal Railways [SBB] fitted car type headlights to the locomotives by replacing the two lights at the bottom of the triangle. The original idea was to improve visibility when in tunnels, but this did not prove to be a success. Visibility did improve but not by much. I was wondering just how much of the track ahead can be seen by the driver with the top mounted headlamp?
Thank you.

A well adjusted headlight certainly works well. Bit of a bugger when shunting sometimes as it gets in the eyes, if it does not go to dim. The seal beam lights are far superior to the old globe types.
