Posted for the photographer, Dennis Mitchell:
In the late 1960s the government decided that Newcastle needed a new industrial 'hub' away from the steel works. So they combined 5 smallish islands in the Hunter river into a new island called Kooragang.
This first photo shows 5912 just days away from withdrawal on 890 goods (transfer around the suburban area) crossing the new Kooragang Island bridge.
The second shot. We were waiting for the empty non-air coalie with 5369 to come through when we thought that there was a lot of noise for one loco, when 5917 on 891 goods, ex Kooragang, came across our viewfinders - a lucky shot!!
