A MAN was being treated for serious injuries in hospital last night after being hit by a train near Dingwall railway station in Ross-shire.

The man, who has not been named, is believed to have lost an arm and a foot in the accident, which happened at the Dingwall Canal North level crossing, about 300 yards north of the station at about 2pm on Saturday.

Firefighters from Dingwall went to the scene but were not required as the man had by that time been freed from underneath the train, which had been taking passengers from Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness.

He was taken by ambulance to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness and police later said his injuries were not life-threatening.

A local man on his way to the nearby Ross County FC friendly match against Cowdenbeath said he had seen the man on the railway line shortly before the accident happened.

He said: "I saw this man staggering all over the place.

"A short time later, I heard police sirens and I walked back towards the railway line where a policeman told me a man had gone under the train."

He added: "It's a shocking thing to happen in broad daylight. It must have been an awful experience for the train driver."

Another local man said: "The accident happened near a campsite, so maybe the man was trying to get over the railway line to the site.

"There are plenty of warning signs telling people not to go on to the line."

The accident happened just south of where the railway line branches off to Thurso and to Kyle of Lochalsh.

Services between Inverness and Thurso and Kyle were disrupted for several hours after the incident.
