A mother watched in horror as her two-year-old son was hit and killed by a train at a level crossing.

Johnny Hall toddled down a path onto the track in Werrington, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

Police said the little boy had taken the footpath leading towards the line and his mother had tried in vain to catch him. She then witnessed the horrific accident.

The child and his mother had been visiting a local traveller's site when the accident happened.

Johnny's aunt, Eileen Connors, read a statement on behalf of the family.

She said: "No blame is placed on anyone. There is only deep sorrow.

"This was a tragic accident that took the life of a cherished and beloved little who boy who was full of life and loved by everyone who knew him.

"Grief is felt by every member of our family and friends. It is also acknowledged that this was a tragic accident.

"With all our heart we truly believe Johnny is now a little angel in heaven."

Police said the toddler's uncle and four-year-old brother were also nearby when he was hit by the train travelling from Lincoln to Peterborough.

Superintendent Paul Brogden said Johnny's mother was "distraught".
