Rovos Rail - September 09

Post by Gabor Kovacs »

Here are a few pictures that I took, while on-duty as relief fireman. What a pleasant day it turned out to be, and then the shunting started in the late afternoon . . . . . . .

That slightly dirty window in the last shot looks familiar!

Seriously though, great photos, Gabor. Thanks!

Do they have steam workings there everyday?

Currently, steam is used from Monday morning throught to late Friday night, and occasionally on a Saturday too, all dependent on in and out bound trains!

Most trains usually depart and arrive on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays, with the odd Dinner Runs and Wedding trains . . .

So what's the stand on steam at RVR these days? Are trains still hauled out of the depot by steam or is it only to create atmosphere at the platform and for shunting?

Most inbound trains are picked up at Centurion by steam. This is a nothing as the locos barely work downhill. Nearly all outbound trains are hauled by steam up to the gate, where electrics take over. Only if the units fail to arrive on time does steam work up to Centurion. Very sad.
The dinner and lunch runs are usually steam-hauled, using the Pretoria Complex route- Pyramid, Koedoespoort, station, CP.
Expect full 5E1 working soon which will end most remaining line turns. Depot shunting and posing will be steam's temporary future.

Today I have up-loaded some new video footage, which was taken this past Wednesday, 16th Sept 09, while I was on relief fireman duty for Rovos Rail.

CLCIK HERE to view the footage.

Enjoy.

Thanks Chris, do you maybe know if there are plans to extend the Catanery into the Depot to eliminate Steam working totally?

Also, what are they going to do between Kimberley and Beaufort West where the line voltage is 25Kv?

Stefan, using Google Earth I measured approx. 3km of track, that has to be traversed between Rovos Rails' railway main gate, and Friends of the Rails' railway main eastern gate.

CLICK HERE to see a PDF documented map, and follow the red arrowed dotted route.

I hope that helps
