Caledon Station

Post by Dylan Knott »

Found myself in Caledon this afternoon so undertook a trip down to station to see what was happening.

5 x 35's were in the yard. 3 x 35's were incoming from Bredarsdorp and the Plasserail Rail Grinder was working in the yard.

SADF Army Train arrived there earlier in week. Military Hardware delivered to AFB Overberg. Mostly flatbeds, DZ's and two Steel Sleeper coaches.

35-068 / 35-466 / 35-037 / 35-435 coupled to two steel passenger coaches as part of Army train. 35-435 had just been started whilst 35-037 was idling. 35-435 then uncoupled from others, rest plus two coaches then shunted onto adjacent line. 35-037 then shut down.

35-033 was acting as station pilot.

35-449 / 35-431 / 35-413 then arrived with empties from Bredarsdorp. Load left on platform rd. Crew changeover here with Bellville crew taking over. Locos then uncoupled and went to shunt 35-435 onto train. All four diesels then coupled onto full FZ's bound for Newlands.

35-033 then shunted empties into SAM. Small green Funkey "SAM" then shunted the wagons in SAM's yard.

Rail Grinder working on the top section of yard. Permanent way staff realigning ballast and a safety audit was underway. All sidings jammed full of wagons. Very neat area. Turntable, water points and ash pits in situ but out of use.

Caledon staff all friendly and very helpful.

Photos will follow later. This forum INSISTS I log in every 5 seconds!!!

Interesting that the Military still use the railways.
