Zimbabwe: A Garratt not so hard at work

Post by Steve Appleton »

Posted for the photographer, Dennis Mitchell:
The other end of the hard-work scale would have to be this class 16A, No 635 [Bayer Peacock, 1953], on the West Nicholson pick-up at Heany Junction in 1980 with just a couple of coal trucks probably for the cement works at Colleen Bawn. The S.M. [Jim McAlpine?] called this train the "Nicko" and so did most of the other staff on the then Rhodesia Railways. Believe it or not these 16As packed a punch of about 55,000lb tractive effort, if memory serves correctly.
