Simons Town line closed

Post by allanroy »

on my way to work this morning I noticed that no trains where running from Fish Hoek to Simons Town and that busses where been used. Tonight the track is still closed and I cant really find out where the problem. The waves are going over the track again and in that section the line seems to have a small kink. Will check tomorrow again.

Metro rail website says -
Train service between Fish Hoek and Simon's Town has been cancelled due to acts of nature, passengers will be conveyed by bus between Fish Hoek and Simon's Town in both directions.

The line is still closed and busses still running between Fish Hoek and Simons Town. Strange not to see any trains anymore, even the track has lost its shine and looking rather rusty

I see the remains of that siding are still in place near Lower North Battery? Odd.

Metrorail working on damaged Fish Hoek-Simons Town tracks
Chanel September | Yesterday

Ocean waves damaged rail lines between Simons Town and Fish Hoek, Metrorail said on Tuesday.

Services in the area were cancelled last week.

Since then, busses have been transporting commuters to their respective destinations.

The rail company explained the retaining wall and railway track had been damaged.

Metrorail’s Riana Scott said engineers were working on the problem.

“Once those assessments are done, we will put remedial action in place and we will fix up, and we anticipate that it will take about 10 to 14 days. So in the meantime there is a bus service that is operating between Fish Hoek and Simons Town until the line is fixed,’ said Scott.

Today metro rail have bought in a train load of huge rock to place along the sea wall to try act as a buffer against the waves that are causing all the damage. The train was powered by 36-014 but I did not manage a photo of it.

The repair of the line needs really a long time.
I'm happy that I had the chance to take some pictures of the trains running there, when I was there.
Thanks for posting from time to time new information and pictures.

Went and had a look at the section where all these rocks had been off loaded. The supporting wall of the railway has completly collapsed in this section, no wonder the line is closed.

as you can see in these two photos the top of the wall used to be almost level with the track.

Drove it down the beach. That is the far end of Long Beach, Simons Town next to the station.
