Ore Wagon Type 1

Post by Kevin Wilson-Smith »

Taken at Thabazimbi Iron Ore Mine.

There were 3 types of wagons in use. I will post up the other variants.

Questions....

Aside from the fact that these are basically gondolas is there a specific name for this particular type of wagon?

First introduced when?

Is this type of wagon used for other goods? What?

On this wagon note the use of the old logo.......... Note also the shape of the load of iron ore - this is a "bread loaf" shape- a profile that reduces loss and dust when under way. All loaded wagons had the same profile. Do ore loads from other ore mines have the same profile or do they show "dumped" loads.

Have a look at http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/sar/sar-eb.html. Looks like the classification changed, but gives interesting info
