Rovos class 6 Witbank

Post by John Ashworth »

Nathan wrote:In the early days of Rovos rail, the locomotives and coaches were based in
Witbank. They had obtained this class 6 number 439 that had been plinthed at
Winburg. This was their first operational locomotive. The Witbank Steam
Railway was in operation at that time and Rovos kindly allowed usage of it
on a train to Wolwekrans, for the WSR. I was the fireman that day and the
weather was terrible. Travelling tender first back to the station in Witbank,
we got soaked!

Shortly afterwards, the RVR operations were moved to Pretoria. The class 6
is currently withdrawn.

I would love to see a class 6 running again, but its pretty unlikely, what I do find amazing is how many of those old timers still exist today.
Not quite on the rails.
Check out my train vids. http://www.youtube.com/user/nixops

If I stand correct that class 6 has an rich history.
It started as a CGR then went to OVSS/CSAR and finished with the SAR.

The only other which a full history is class 7 1056 which went from CGR/NGR/SAR.
The only surving 7 class that saw service with the NGR.
