Idler Cars - SB Rotary Dumper

Ask a real train driver or fireman questions about how engines work, railways operate or anything else. If we do not know the answer, we will find out!

Idler Cars - SB Rotary Dumper

Post by Robert McDonald »

I, too, was curious about the use of idler cars whilst pushing ore cuts through the rotary dumper

But when one takes into consideration the state of human affairs, it is not unreasonable to
recon that the idler cars not only improve the engineer's vision - as opposed to staring at
the backside of an ore car, but also, prevent a million dollar accident, such as recorded at
Robert's Bank, BC. I have never been able to find out WHO took these photos, but they
certainly make the case for insulation:

BTW, what IS the purpose of the TRIPOD on the idler car?
