Discussion about Heritage Rail on 702 16 Nov 2010

Post by Derek Walker »

They had another discussion on the JENNY CRWYS-WILLIAMS SHOW on 702 with the Transnet Heritage Foundation. I cant say who the 2 guests were because I missed their names/affiliations, Nathan may remember because he called in. But it was a really uninspring show. And sadly I dont know who chose the guests because I am not sure whether they were really aware of the realities on the ground. A lot was waffled about the Outeniqua Choo-choo, but it was all disconcerting stuff. Hopefully it will be podcast, but as far as I was concerned it was a real waste because so much of what I heard did not quite gell with what I read on the local discussions.
Not quite on the rails.

Agreed. Very disappointing. The people invited were Kobus Volschenk, who manages the George operation( or used to), and Thandi, both from Transnet Foundation.
Very little sense and reality spoken, and many untruths and ignorances surfaced.
It is true that one requires a lot of background knowledge to understand this whole thing. 702 kept bringing up Puffing Dougie but this has nothing to do with Transnet. Transnet were not taken to task for their failure in their responsibility to heritage rail.
What is needed is a forum of roleplayers and a 2 hour show.

Chris, is there any way of getting that message over to 702 and motivating for such a show?

I can ask Cape Talk and then get Ian Pretorius involved. People can then phone in.

Unfortunately JCW has a tendency to waffle and knows very little about the reality of the rail situation. What also bugs me is they get people who phone in that often touch on some obscure point and that then gets harped on for the rest of the show. One thing is evident though, there are a lot of people with an interest in Heritage rail, and a lot of people with good memories of the days when trains ran. But until somebody does a show thats rational, truthful and tells it like it is I am afraid these shows will have very little impact. Dylan should go kick some rear end at Cape Talk in CT seeing as FoAR need the publicity.
