Plinthed 4-8-4T in Meyerton

Post by Derek Walker »

Lo and behold, one of my workmates found another loco in his travels. This one is at "the Toy Train" in Meyerton, and not only a steamer, but a Hunslett, Super Frelon and the shell of a sub.

This place definitely needs a visit... I believe they have quite a good collection of model trains too.
Not quite on the rails.

The loco has been identified as: NBL industrial steam loco preserved under roof at JR Metals in Meyerton is 4-8-4T NBL 25940/1946 ex AMCOAL's Springbok Mine (Hope Section) [later Goedehoop] colliery where it worked as No 5. The loco was out of use by 1991. The bag van is number 4424
The Hunslet (#5470 of 1957) saw service as "No 1" from new at PPC's small cement "No 4 Works", at Orkney. By 1991 the loco was out of use, and was later moved to JR Metals Ltd, a plant dealer in the Meyerton industrial area.
Info courtesty of Piet Conradie and John Middleton's Industrial Locomotives of South Africa 1991
Oh, and I forgot to post a pic of the railcar, pity its got such a dumb roof over it though.

Hi Derek,

What is the address in Meyerton or contact details? The diesel is the same model as the one that we have a Reefsteamers but it has been fitted with vacuum brakes, which ours is missing. I am sure Andrew would be interested in seeing if we can get the exhauster donated or puchased for our loco.
