Competition - where is the bridge located? Built when?

Photos of Southern African Stations, Signals, Infrastructure and Miscellaneous railway items! Photos should be 800x600 pixels, maximum size 130K. Very good ones will be moved to the Online Gallery, the rest will be pruned away after 14 days to conserve space. If you have photos of FOTR Engines and Stock, please post them in the FOTR Gallery in the Friends of the Rail Forum above.

Competition - where is the bridge located? Built when?

Post by Kevin Wilson-Smith »

Here you are - a teaser for the experienced, the very experienced....!!

Or just guess!!

Firstly, this bridge is on a railway line that does still see trains from time to time. So does anyone have an idea where it is located - roughly. Province? The river it is crossing? Towns nearby?

Secondly how old is the bridge? It has a builders plaque on it that indicates the date it was constructed......

Hmmm, looking at the green, and muddy water, must be either Natal or Eastern cape..

If you hadn't posted it in the South African photo gallery I would have said Tsavo, Kenya. Oh, but it can't be, as there are no lions in the shot...

Interesting John!

It is in South Africa, but rather obliquely what you have said does provide a clue!

It's in the Kruger Park. It's near that place where you go on holiday where there is a steam loco standing in an old station that is no longer connected to anything.

No further ideas from anyone?

Let me think up some subtle clues..............

Remember we want the Province, a nearby town (perhaps) and the rough age of the bridge - the date it was made........

It is out of the way slightly, so only a train enthusuast may have seen it, so not much more then the above is needed.....

I'm also curious where it might be.
I think I haven't been there during all my visits to South Africa.

So local people, I hope I can read soon the solution.

Why do the feeling arise that this is not in the RSA, it look in a sad state, perhaps in Maputo or Swaziland.

I have never seen this bridge, nor claim to know where it is located, but every time I look at the photo's, the riverbank in the background reminds me of a similar one on the road between Port Elizabeth and Addo Elephant Park. I seem to remember also that just before the southern entrance to the Park, one crosses a (rather neglected) railway line which crosses the river close by. The problem is that Google Earth shows that bridge and it's not similar to the one in your photo. It's just upstream from Colchester. This leaves me with only the memory of another line I've seen near Alice in the Eastern Cape. I have even once seen a train running on this line (about 5 years ago) and suspect that this line connects Grahamstown with King Williamstown? Judging from the background scenery (the riverbank and the "forest" in the one pic) I would easily be able to believe that this bridge is somewhere in the Eastern Cape.

This is not even a proper guess - simply an attempt to see how close I could get when the final answer is revealed!

Perhaps Mpumalanga, on the line between Ermelo and Machadodorp, over the Olifants or Crocodile river. ??

Hi Kevin,

Please put us out of our misery and tell us where the bridge is.
