In the late summer of 1998 I spend my holidays in the USA at a reader trip of the "Eisenbahnkurier". This was a special trip because it was announced to visit some railways in the USA. It needed not long then I decided to book this journey.
We were a groupe of 20 or thirty people when the journey began. If you believe it or not, 10 of us meet almost every year yet. And at this journey we became really good friends.

On the August 26 we were in Antonito where one terminus of the line Antonito - Charma is. The other terminus is - yes, you're right - in Charma. After we had breakfast in the "Narrow Gauge Railroad Inn" - see picture of the sign of the motel below, we spend the time at the depot where they already prepared the 2-8-2 No.484 for the trip, until the trip began. Here are some pictures of the loco.

Note the mixed gauge track in some of the photos, all the lines here were originally built as 3' gauge but the section North to Alamosa was converted first to mixed gauge and then after the closure of the D & RGW narrow gauge it became standard gauge only with just a few remnants of the mixed gauge surviving at Antonito.
