Scrapping of Sandstone 19Ds

The irony is that even though they were moved to a storage line at Sandstone it was still necessary to guard the locomotives as attempts were still being made to steal scrap off them.
A study was conducted to see whether it was feasible to try and restore one of the locomotives, using the other two as spares, but with all the boilers needing a total rebuild it did not make economic sense. Sandstone which is not a 3’6†operator already has a 19D, which was rebuilt as new, standing in Bloemfontein but there does not appear to be any interest from anyone to lease the locomotive so it would have made no sense to spend the money building another when other important ongoing projects require funding. The proceeds from the 19D’s will also go towards these projects.
Our steam team has removed all the useable parts from the 19D’s which are now in safe keeping. We are also in the process of providing SAPPI with some of spares that were saved, which they are in sore need of, to extend the life of their units.
The sheds which were also moved at great expense from Ficksburg have been rebuilt in the farm complex and will be used to provide much needed storage for other rail heritage items.
We do not have any plans to scrap any other locomotives in the foreseeable future and will continue to save and preserve what we can

Would be nice if other groups were told as maybe they also need spares.
Steam is expensive to maintain and if all spares were removed then scrapping is ok. An offhand guess is that it would have cost around R1 million to restore one of those 19D's.

Depends on what was considered to be a possible spare. Heritage clubs could take just about everything and use it. Wheels, axles, chimney, petticoat... they can all be re-cycled into another 19D with a bit of loving care.
But as you ask. Were the clubs given the chance to get any of the parts?

No one was approached. This cutting I heard from grapevine reporsts. Lots of soot now on certain faces!

Then we need some "please explain" statements.
Disgusting that three locos are scrapped for no particular reason and in secret.
There are groups that could have done with a 19D or spares off one, yet as in reports SAPPI was to receive spares but no one else.

What of the 14 class boiler that was saved from SANRASM?
Where are 3496 and 3536 at present?

Also at Kommandonek. Have no idea what security there is for these 4 locos there but they would appear to have been positioned there "strategically".
NCs are owned by Transnet and are leaselend to Sandstone.

SAICOR being a commercial business, would have most likely offered to pay for the spares taken, whereas most preservation groups have a need for the spares but dont have the funds.
USR's own 19D 2685 is waiting for the driving wheels to be dropped out for inspection of the axel boxes. Having spares would certainly be handy if the present boxes cannot be repaired.
