Re: Brassards
I'd suggest opening a new topic with a suitable heading, either in this sub-forum or in the Railway Research sub-forum at http://www.friendsoftherail.com/phpBB2/ ... .php?f=110

Re: Brassards
The most obvious and no doubt largest of these lines would have been the New Cape Central Railway (NCCR) from Worcester to George (and beyond?), which remained in private hands until 1925.

Steve,
When then would you think in this case was the SAR wording used?

The railways department of the old SAR&H/SAS&H entity (which became SA Transport Services - SATS - on 1 April 1981 and then Transnet Ltd on 1 April 1990) was always known and branded itself as SAR/SAS. Similarly the airways department after incorporation into SAR&H was known and branded as SAA/SAL.
Talking of "private" railway ines in SA, the 860km Orex line from Sishen down to Saldanha Bay was technically "private" for a short period. It was conceived, built, owned and operated by the state-owned Iscor from the start of its construction in 1973, through its opening in 1976 until its incorporation into SAR&H in April 1978.
