There was a bit of discussion on the forum a while ago about brake tenders which were used by early British diesel traction to assist with braking unfitted goods trains (ie trains without a continuous automatic train brake) - see http://www.friendsoftherail.com/phpBB2/ ... nder#p2753

Diesel brake tender to be recreated
One type of rolling stock which failed to survive into preservation was the diesel brake tender... but now, Railway Vehicle Preservations, based on the Great Central Railway, has announced that it is to re-create one of these vehicles.
They were introduced when BR realised the new diesel locos of the 1950s and '60s had insufficient brake force when working unfitted goods trains.
A total of 122 were built [...] They were usually placed in front of the loco, or just behind. [...]
