Being so close to Roanoke I couldn't miss a visit to the Virginia Museum of Transport while the ladies (and the men under tight control) went shopping.
Photos attached are the main steam exhibits.
Norfolk and Western Class J 4-8-4 No 611 built 1950
Norfolk and Western Class A 2-6-6-4 No 1218 built 1943
Porter Firless 0-4-0 No.1 Built 1943 (Note piston valves!)
Norfolk and Western Class G-1 2-8-0 No 6 built 1897
Virginian Railway Class SA 0-8-0 No.4 built 1910
Also in Roanoke is the O Winston Link Photographic Museum in the old passenger station which has many iconic photos of norfolk and Western Steam in Service
