The presentation will be based on a 2011 railway-and-heritage themed holiday that Shaun and Patrick Ackerman took in the country of Switzerland, to celebrate the 40th birthday of our good friend, Philip Maurer.

Herr. Maurer is a good friend and ardent supporter of Reefsteamers, and is our faithful, efficient webmaster.

Their holiday odyssey was a whirlwind tour of Switzerland’s amazing modern railway system where speeds of 100-120kph are often the MINIMUM, for the goods trains on the main line – and the trains often overtake each other at those speeds without stopping. Passenger trains usually keep their time schedule to within 15-30 seconds! The Acker-lads also got to sample and enjoy preserved steam traction in various gauges, enjoying mountain climbing rack railways, steam-operated paddle boats, visiting museums and checking out live steam models.

The evening presentation of these railway and vintage goodies will be hosted by none other than Dr. ‘Smudge’ Ackerman. (aka ‘Shaun.’)

The bring and braai starts at 16h00 at the top formal clubhouse. Please bring along your own meat to braai, as well as other foodstuffs. The braai fire(s) will be lit and prepared for you. Additionally, you will need to bring along your own beer or wine. We do ask that you don’t bring spirits, please! Although we do have crockery available, it would be convenient if you bring your own paper plates and such.

As always, once the function starts, the normal rules concerning the consumption of alcohol at the depot are to be adhered to. Once the bottles are opened, no one will be permitted within the workshops, on board the locomotives or within the various sheds.

The presentation starts in the formal club house at 18h30 sharp and will take about two hours.

Please respond by no later than Friday midday, so that we can have an idea as to who will be interested in coming to enjoy the relaxed social evening with us. We also need to know how many seats to lay out, as well as how big the braai fires must be. There is no charge for the event.

You may respond by replying to this email <leeg@institutex.co.za> and I will pass on the numbers to Shaun by Friday. Diana Sanderson has already made this into an event on the Reefsteamers Facebook page, so you can ‘book in’ there if you wish. To avoid possible confusion, please do not commit yourself both by email as well as on Facebook.

Spring is here, so cold weather is no longer a valid excuse. Come out and enjoy a different sort of Saturday evening!
