UK - Tube Oddities - Talking of Escalators

Post by Kevin Wilson-Smith »

Every seems to remember traveling on long escalators - but were they on the longest on the system?

Probably not - unless they had been to Angel..... which has the longest escalator - 318 steps and also the longest in Europe. Vertical rise of 27.5 metres. Longer then this there will not be on the Underground, as beyond this size it become uneconomical and lifts instead are used.

The shortest escalator is at Stratford - 4 metres.

The most escalators are at Waterloo - 23 (plus 2 moving walkways)!

The first escalator was at Earls Court - in 1911, and had steps made of wood.

The total number of escalators - 412 - in total they do 1 around the world trip every 3 and a half days!

A whole heap of useless information for tube travellers!
