UK - Tube Oddities - When to walk!

Post by Kevin Wilson-Smith »

Some people know this, but some do not - simply that in some situations it is quicker to walk then take the tube!

I know of a couple of people (who shall remain nameless) who persist in taking the tube between 2 stations, without realising (or wanting to) that they can walk round the corner to the same place.

The stations I have always known that "are around the corner" are.....

Covent Garden to Leicester Square - just over a couple of hundred metres! I think a few people know about these two though!

And Leicester Square to Piccadilly Circus - just under a 15minute walk.

As is Covent Gardens to Piccadilly Circus and Embankment to Charing Cross - the latter is probably two to three hundred metres.

And guess what - Convent Gardens to Charing Cross is also under 15mins walk!

Euston to Euston Square is also a short walk.

Some others I have learnt about (but never tried as I was never trying on a regular basis to get from one to the other) are.....

Highbury and Islington and Angel
Queensway and Bayswater
Monument and London Bridge
Hanger Lane and Park Royal
West Acton and North Ealing
Paddington and Lancaster Gate
New Cross and Deptford Bridge DLR?
St Paul's and Mansion House
Cannon Street and any of Bank, Monument or Mansion House.
Warren Street, Great Portland Street and Regent's Park.
Aldgate, Aldgate East and Liverpool Street
Liverpool Street, Moorgate and Old Street

All of the above allegedly take less then 15 minutes to walk, and therefore are faster then the tube - down escalators, stairs, change platforrms etc etc!

Lastly the 3 routes below can be walked in half and hour or less and still will be quicker then taking the tube - due in these instances to the numbers of stops and changes involved.

The first route for examples involves 9 stops and 2 changes!

Hampstead to Finchley Road
Chancery Lane to Farrington
Mansion House to Bank

Anyone know of any more similar routes where one may as well walk - IF you are in a hurry!

There are many, especially where the tbe journey would involve a change. As a Londoner born and bred (albeit a long way from my roots now) I know a lot of them instinctively when the occasion arises, but can't necessarily remember them.

I always walk from Holborn to Covent Garden, and Picadilly Circus to Tottenham Court Road. Don't know whether it's quicker, but definitely more interesting.
