I can only add my own condolences to those of Nathan. I fired often to Phillip ("Flip"). He was a great companion on the footplate and always ready to help us and teach us.Nathan wrote:Phillip Reimers passed away in the early hours of this morning .
Our deepest sympathies to his family and wife Daleen.
Phillip was one of our drivers and his wife, the first lady Fireman in the country.

Re: RIP Phillip Reimers
My sincerest condolence goes to Darlene and Reimers Family.
I also had the privilege to work and fire for “Oom†Flip, who was always very helpful and willing to pass-on his knowledge of steam locomotives!
He will be missed!

Funeral arrangements
Elize Lubbe wrote:Morning all
Flip will be laid to rest on Friday, 20th March @ 13:00.
Church: New Apostolic Church
Pretorius Street
Pretoria
The church is opposite the bus depot
Darlene also invites all to meet for refreshments after the funeral at the lapa at Fonteindal.
Please try your utmost best to attend the service, I visited the family last night, and this is really a very difficult time for her and the children and financially they are also not doing well. If at all possible, can you assist by giving a donation to the family, I will do the necessary collection on Friday.
I thank each and every one of you for the sms’s I received, I have passed them on to Darlene last night.
Regards
Elize

Re: RIP Phillip Reimers
I would like to add that Flip's passing is regretted as far away as the UK.
In 2007 a group of Welsh Highland Railway loco staff came out to to provide extra man-power for Reefsteamers during the Dave Rodgers Steam Safari trip down into the Eastern Free State.
It was a steep learning curve even for experienced UK engine-men; very hard work but also very enjoyable. One of those who made the week so unforgettable was Flip. He was unfailingly friendly to us when he might have been suspicious of newcomers from overseas. He was totally professional but managed to give plentiful advice and cheerful help in ways that were welcomed and appreciated. I and the other members of the WHR group remember our times with Flip and also with Darlene with affection and respect. Our thoughts are with Darlene, and Flip's family at this moment.

Always friendly; always ready with a unpretentious humorous comment; always willing to submit to an Alco-blow. He was never positive (nor his wife), but we always had a good joke about his smoking. We will miss him.
