A cyclist died after he was struck by a train at a railway level crossing in Shropshire. It happened in Eyton Lane, Baschurch, shortly before 9pm yesterday.

Neither the train driver nor any passengers were injured in the collision.

Paramedics, police officers and officers from British Transport Police (BTP) were called to attend the incident after they received emergency calls at 8.55pm.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

A BTP spokesman said today the train involved was the 19.09 Arriva Trains Wales service between Birmingham International and Chester.

He said: “It struck a cyclist on Eyton Lane level crossing at Baschurch, near Shrewsbury.

“A full investigation is being carried out but at this time there are no suspicious circumstances.”

Mr John Ellery, coroner for north and mid Shropshire, and the BTP rail accident investigation branch have been advised of the incident, he added.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray MacGregor said the train stopped further down the line following the collision.

He added: “When crews arrived they found a man who had suffered very severe injuries.

“Sadly, it quickly became apparent that there was nothing that could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

“The train had stopped further up the line but no-one had been hurt.”

The incident caused havoc for rail travellers on services between places as far away as Cardiff Central and Holyhead in Wales.

Train services were suspended to allow accident investigation experts from BTP to carry out their work.
