A man has been shot and injured in an incident at Carfin railway station in North Lanarkshire.

Strathclyde Police said officers were called to the station about 1625 BST after a report that a man was in possession of a firearm on the track.

A police helicopter and an armed response unit were sent to the scene.

At about 1725 hours a man was shot, say police. He was taken by ambulance to Wishaw General Hospital. The station was expected to remain shut overnight.

Assistant Chief Constable Hamish Cormack, head of community safety at Strathclyde Police, said: "As a force we take the deployment of armed officers very seriously and we are well aware of the potential consequences of dealing with incidents involving firearms.

"In accordance with the national guidelines, an investigation will be conducted by an independent force and in view of this, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage."

The Scottish Ambulance Service said it was called to Carfin at around 5.30pm by police and took a man to hospital.

Locals said there was still a heavy police presence in the area late in the evening.
