A 45-year-old woman has been air lifted to hospital after a collision between the car she was driving and a train on a level crossing in Gwynedd.

Firefighters called to the the crossing on Beach Road in Fairbourne at 1150 BST helped the woman out of her vehicle.

She was taken by air ambulance to Bronglais Hospital, Aberystwyth. North Wales Police said her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Nobody else on the Arriva train, going from Machynlleth to Pwllheli, was hurt.

Trains travelling on the railway line have now been stopped while work to clear the tracks is completed and a joint investigation, led by British Transport Police, gets underway to determine exactly what led to the collision.

Bill Redfern, who was travelling in one of the train's two carriages, said that after the collision, passengers took the Fairbourne miniature railway to Barmouth.

Mr Redfern added that the Arriva Trains Wales crew "should be commended" for looking after passengers in the aftermath of the collision.
