NGG 16s, Umzinto Natal, 1974

Post by Steve Appleton »

Posted for the photgrapher, Dennis Mitchell:
Umzinto was a junction and terminus for the 3'6" branch from Kelso, on the Durban - Port Shepstone main line, and a 2' gauge line ran from here to Donnybrook with a branch from Ixopo to Madelena. "Cry The Beloved Country" featured this line.
This is Umzinto loco on a quiet Sunday. The amount of traffic on this 2' gauge line was incredible and these mighty midgets could lift 160 tons on the 1 in 30 grades (or about the same as an Australian 32 class).
