EXCITING NEWS ABOUT THE GEORGE TO KNYSNA LINE

It’s been a long while since our last Choo-Tjoe newsletter, and understandably, many enthusiasts are anxious for news. Unfortunately Transnet has yet to make an announcement on the bidding process for the George to Mossel Bay line. We are expecting news in this regard soon, and will communicate with you as soon as possible.

I am pleased to announce that last month, the Provincial Government of the Western Cape asked Transnet for permission to take over the George to Knysna line, as well as the rolling stock, land and buildings around it. Minister Winde is adamant that this very special heritage icon be preserved: “For us, first prize will be to restore the line to its former glory for the enjoyment of people from around the world. Of course, there are financial constraints to achieving this, but I am determined to do all that I can to see this accomplished. We are also open to the idea of erecting other tourist ventures alongside the line. We must remember how important it is to preserve the heritage that has been passed down to us. I will continue to fight for what rightfully belongs to the generations of the future. There are very few locations that have views as beautiful as those from the windows of the Choo-Tjoe, and if Transnet agrees to our request, we will immediately begin to look for ways to use the Choo-Tjoe as a draw card to attract tourists and enthusiasts to our Province.”

On another matter, the Minister wished to express his support for the proposed tramline in Franschhoek and the Theewaterskloof Vintage Rail Project. If successful, these projects will go a long way toward restoring rail tourism in our province.

Dylan, is the Franschoek line passable? Is it still connected to the national network? I thought it had been partly lifted and/or built over in some places (legally or not)?

Franschhoek line is still there and in good condition. As far as I know its still connected to the National Network.

I must add its nice to see our Elgin project receiving much needed publicity!

That sounds good to me that they will try to reopen the Knysna line. Usually travelled that line by train when I was in George.
And it is really a beautiful scenery and a wonderful journey to Knysna.
