Who took our railway track?

When is a railway line not a railway line? When it has no track, of course.

This was the strange sight which greeted people on Derry’s Peace Bridge this week after the railway track on the main Derry to Belfast line was removed as part of a multi-million pound upgrade.

The track between Derry and Coleraine is closed for major engineering works and will not re-open until April 2013.

The work is the first phase of a £75 million upgrade to the Derry to Coleraine railway and NIR says it represents “a significant investment in the line for the future”.

The project includes a full relay of the track between Coleraine and Castlerock and between Eglinton and Derry.

Throughout the past week, workers have been busily engaged in lifting sections of the track which run alongside the east bank of the River Foyle.
