New-look Mallard returns to National Railway Museum

THE newly-restored Mallard has gone on display in York.

The locomotive can be seen at the National Railway Museum’s workshop following a major refurbishment, ahead of a programme of events at the museum to mark 75 years since Mallard became the fastest steam locomotive of all time.

Mallard is joined by sister A4 class locomotive Union of South Africa in the Museum’s Great Hall – the first of many family reunions for the iconic machine as it awaits the arrival of its transatlantic twins Dwight D Eisenhower and Dominion of Canada.

Steve Davies, director of the National Railway Museum, said: “We wanted to do something really special to mark the 75th anniversary and what could be more spectacular than an international family reunion? When these mighty machines were exported across the Atlantic in the Sixties, no one thought they would ever come back.

“Giving Mallard a new look that befits a speed champion was the first step in this immense project and we hope the public will come and see her in her new finery ahead of her momentous meeting with her North American sisters.”
