The enterprising JB Train Tours company (www.jbtours.co.za) specialises in attractive packages, making use of scheduled Shosholoza Meyl intercity expresses. These include standard “tourist class” trains as well as Premier Classe and the Blue Train. The fact that JB Tours’ excursions invariably “sell out” well before departure date demonstrates effectively that travel by train is still very popular in South Africa.

Available to anyone getting married before the end of 2012, the four-day “Honeymoon Train Tour” is costed from an extremely reasonable R4,999 per person. Participants enjoy the best part of two days and a night in the luxurious Premier Classe from Johannesburg to Cape Town, two nights in a hotel (plus open-top bus excursion) and a flight home. Transfers in Cape Town are included. The equivalent non-honeymoon tour works out from R6,999 per person, which is still excellent value.

A three-night weekend in Durban will cost Johannesburgers from R3,660 each, including Premier Classe luxury train in both directions and Saturday night in a hotel.

A Blue Train special that takes some beating at R9,250 per person includes one-way on the train (all meals thrown in), two nights in a good hotel and a flight home. This package – at a price less than the normal train ticket – is restricted to persons resident on the African continent.
