Caledon Goods Story - 3

Post by John Ashworth »

All photos and text by Chris Janisch, January 2008

A quick about turn and we were soon back in Bot River station. Waiting alongside the columns, we could follow the progress of the train as she slid down the hillside behind the hotel, before letting loose at the level crossing east of the station. The train made a fine sight as she wound past us, a steady haze of exhaust fumes hovering above the locos.

We continued up the mountainside while catching glimpses of the line winding through Houhoek Pass, and the famous bridges can be seen from the road. At Houhoek Inn there is a crossing loop and we awaited the train on the western side. There is a tight S-bend on the exit of the station and this is where we recorded the quadruple thump of the diesels.
