Sadly, I don't think this line will ever reopen.

Time to change the mindset and try light rail options.

Forget steam.

I was on holiday in Knysna just a few weeks ago and took some time to have a look at the line.
Knysna station looks forlorn.... Missing the tourists. Lines very rusty.

It seems people have been vandalizing, lines moved/bent.

The live over the vlie has lots of depressions.

The earth fall was not as big as I had thought. It should not take much effort to move it - but then is a problem of containing whats above it.

The rails through the tunnel have rotted badly, but only the section through the tunnel. Presumably the damp, salty, dark environment.

I don't know if the R250 million quoted is correct, but I have not looked at the entire line. I do know that the longer they delay, the more expensive it will be.

I tried to attach some pictures I took but the system will not accept .jpg files.... :-(

Thanks, Mike. Some parts of the forum are not enabled to accept photos so that those with slow internet connections can follow the discussions without waiting for large photo files to load. This sub-forum is one of them and will not accept .jpg files, but you should be able to post them in the South African photogallery sub-forum. The relevant photogallery sub-forum would be http://www.friendsoftherail.com/phpBB2/ ... .php?f=311

Looks to me like the Pandrol clips have been removed/stolen which has allowed the rail to buckle as it expands and contracts with temperature changes, etc.
