Rovos Rail queries

Post by John Ashworth »

Lots of chirping about Rovos Rail recently (since 19th March) on the sar-L Yahoo group. We reproduce some of it here without comment.
Worrying report received from the Rovos site at Pretoria this morning:

19D s 2701, 2702 and 25NCs 3440, 3480, 3484 all stripped and dumped. Reported that a scrap company visiting soon to give quotes for at least two of the locos.

Can anyone locally give an accurate report of what is planned for these locos?
No info on plans. But when Rohan bought these locos, it was with the intent to actually being able to use them. Now he can't other than one being used to tow the train into Capital Park past where the wires stop. So other than one or two needed for that and perhaps another for display such as the Class 6, why not get something for them that could be put towards other assets...
Even if they scrap all five steam locos, they would still have operational 19D 3360, 25NC 3442 and 3533 for taking the trains under the wire, as well as stored 6 class 439 for display...
6 Class 439 is operational having been put back into service for a film contract.

Only 2701 and 3484 are for sale.

Eventually locos wear out so it should not be unexpected.
