Photos taken from the footbridge that leads across the marshalling yard from just near the station to the workshops.

Interesting John. Looks like a time warp!
Are those wagons still used?
Are the semaphores in operation?

Yes to both, although most of the freight traffic is now containers, and there's a big container terminal just south of Nairobi.

Crikey - looks strange to see wagons other than container flats! Definitely a time warp... There is even a short wagon in there.

Yes, and there are still loads of short 4-wheel coaches over by the C&W area. I don't know if they're still used - I think I saw a short coach or caboose on the DVD of one of 5918's trips to Mombasa.

John!

I far as I am aware, may I safely assume the Kenya Railways, operates on metre gauge?

This is a really quite incredible!

These photos look exactly the same as when I was last there, and in fact if I can be at my old photos I will post them to show you how identical these pictures actually. And it was, in 1973 when I was last there!

Funnily enough I'm just sitting in the office scanning my 1996 pictures of the same location. Here they are!

I'll post a lot more Kenya and Uganda pictures from 1996/7 later today
