London and probably in the Midlands/Yorkshire. May also head to Portsmouth - I am trying to arrange a visit on an aircraft carrier for my opposite half and we will go if this comes to fruition.
But will have a car, or can hire one.....

See UK Heritage Railways
In the Midlands try the Great Central Railway, which has the only double track main line on a UK heritage railway.
Or the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. FOTR has a friend at this railway, Paul Stratford (you can find his e-mail on this forum or contact me off the forum), and last time I was there he took good care of me.
In Yorkshire, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is supposed to be good.
Near London the Bluebell Railway is famous.

Recommend Great Central-Leicester- and Mid Hants. Severn Valley and North York Moors a must but may be far away. Traffic is killing to drive through so base yourself for 2-3 days at BnBs nearby a chosen railway. But I recommend seeing at least 2. Buy Steam Railway when you are there for up to date info on what's running

Of course if you are in York, you just have to visit the National Railway Museum located there.

Pity you are not in North Wales because the Welsh Highland railway with its South African NG Garratts is another must http://www.welshhighlandrailway.net/ and http://whr.bangor.ac.uk/
