Thieves who stole lengths of copper cable alongside a railway line in West Yorkshire have caused disruption for thousands of football fans.

Supporters of Huddersfield Town and Leeds United travelling on the route into Leeds from the Pennine town face having their journeys diverted.

Police said the thieves stripped out the valuable cable in the Cottingley area of Leeds overnight.

Trains are being diverted to Wakefield and will pass through Batley.

I have just been reading an Aberdeen Scotland paper - The Press and Journal - who report that this sort of thing is becoming common. Several times on the North East main line signalling cable has been removed with traffic delayed for hours.
