Re: Transnet gearing up to implement ‘Africa Strategy’
This recent statement by Robert Spoon, CEO of Grindrod Locomotives must be giving Transnet Management and their ANC masters indigestion
“Over the next 4 years, Grindrod will invest a considerable amount of money in new assets, which will provide demand for all of the Grindrod Rail businesses. In the end, Grindrod Rail – together with regional rail operators – will become the second biggest rail operator after Transnet in Africaâ€.
Fighting words from a corporation now resident in Mauritius, and at arms length from SA political interferance. Now that the TAZARA is open access, and Grindrod has commenced build of their BOT connecting the Zambian system to the Benguela, shippers in countries to the north will have multiple free enterprise options. Grindrod control the BBR, Transnets gateway to the north is now controlled by a free market operator, with the ability to manipulate freight rates, and offer Dar-es-Salaam and (post 2019) Lobito as options to Durban. If rumours out of Zimbabwe are correct (in light of Zim now being de facto open access), that Botswana Railways are prepared to maintain the line Harare-Mutare, this will give BR the ability to run its own trains to Beira, and no longer be dependent on SA ports via Transnet
