"The trains run under the mountain"

Post by John Ashworth »

"The trains run under the mountain..." Beautifull Table Mountain looks down on the Culembourg coach yard, upon a long forgotten sight. During 2005/2006, the Spier train ran a steam operation based at the old parcels platforms in Cape Town station. The locomotive used was loaned from the local CWPG based at Epping. Class 24 number 3655 was a regular performer on this beautifull set of green ex Rhodesian Railways coaches. Prior to each journey, she had to go to the inspection pits for examination, and was hauled out by the yard shunter.

Class 36 shunt diesel has the honour here of placing 3655 on the pit. On this particular occasion, the locomotive was to travel to Dal Josephat for retubing. You will notice the tubes affixed to the running boards, as a means of transporting them!
